1. What Cortex is
Cortex ("we," "us") is a personal AI note-taking and knowledge-management app, operated by Jake Schorr as a sole proprietor. This policy describes what we collect when you use Cortex, why, and the controls you have over it.
2. What we collect
- Account info: your email and profile details.
- Anything you capture: typed notes, voice recordings (transcribed then discarded from raw audio storage per our retention settings), links you save, photos, and text messages you send us.
- If you connect a phone number: the number itself, the content of texts/calls to and from that number, and call transcripts.
- Derived data our AI generates from the above: journal summaries, wiki pages, embeddings (numeric representations used for search), and daily briefs.
- Basic product-usage analytics (e.g., which features you use).
3. How your content is processed
Capturing, summarizing, answering questions, and maintaining your personal wiki all involve sending your content to AI model providers for processing. We use:
- Anthropic — text understanding, summarization, and the Ask Cortex assistant.
- Groq — speech-to-text transcription for voice notes and calls.
- Voyage AI — embeddings that power search over your own content.
- Telnyx — carries SMS and phone call traffic if you connect a number.
- Supabase — our database and file storage.
- Resend — delivers account and digest emails.
- Upstash — rate-limiting infrastructure (does not store your content).
These providers process your data on our behalf, under their own data-processing terms, and do not use it to train their own models. We do not sell your data to anyone, ever.
4. Private captures
Anything you mark "just for me" at capture time is excluded from your wiki, from anything Cortex proactively surfaces, and from what Ask Cortex will reference — unless you explicitly ask about it directly.
5. Texting and calling
SMS and phone features are opt-in only. Connecting a phone number requires verifying you own it via a one-time code. A separate, explicit toggle is required before we send you any unprompted recurring text (like a daily brief) — it's off by default. Message and data rates may apply; message frequency varies. Reply STOP at any time to stop all texts, or HELP for help. Automated phone calls require your separate, explicit consent and can be turned off at any time in Settings.
Mobile opt-in data is never shared for marketing. Your phone number and your SMS consent status are not sold, rented, or shared with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. We share your number only with the telecommunications providers required to deliver the messages you requested (currently Telnyx).
6. Your data, your control
You can export your entire brain as a folder of files at any time from Settings. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data — captures, wiki pages, embeddings, call/SMS logs, and your account itself — with one action in Settings. This is irreversible.
7. Security
Your data is isolated per-account at the database level — no other user's account can read your rows. Access to AI processing is rate-limited and budget-capped per account. We are still early-stage software (see our Terms); if you find a security issue, please tell us directly rather than disclosing it publicly.
8. Who this is for
Cortex is not intended for use by anyone under 18.
9. Changes
We'll update this page as the product changes and note the date at the top. We'll tell you directly if a change materially affects how your data is handled.
